Your First App
Build a working approval Flow in 5 minutes. You'll create a simple flow where someone submits a request, a reviewer approves or rejects it, and the Flow ends.
What you'll build
Approval Flows like this one replace email chains, route decisions automatically, and leave behind a clean audit trail, useful any time you need a real record of who approved what.
You'll build a three-step flow:
- Step 1: someone fills in a request (a Form Block)
- Step 2: a reviewer approves or rejects it (a Review Block)
- Steps 3 & 4: the outcome is marked Approved or Rejected (two Status Blocks)
This is the most common Flow pattern. Once you have it working, you can extend it with conditions, notifications, and more.
Step 1: Create a new flow
Go to your dashboard and click Flows in the sidebar. Click the Create Flow button in the top right. Give it a name like "Approval Request" and click Create. You'll land in the Flow Designer: a blank canvas with the Blocks panel on the left.
Step 2: Add a Form Block
In the Blocks panel on the left, drag a Form Block onto the canvas (or click it to place it at the center). This is where submitters will fill in their request.
Configure the form
- Click the block to open the Configuration Panel on the right
- In the General tab, rename it to something like "Submit Request"
- Switch to the Form tab and click + Create Form
- Add a few fields, for example a Text field for "Request Title" and a Text Area for "Details"
- The form saves automatically as you edit
Choose who can start the Flow
Switch to the Assignments tab (where you control who's allowed to do this step). Since this is the first step, your choice here decides who can start the Flow at all. Pick a specific user, or select Role and choose Member so any workspace member can submit.
Step 3: Add a Review Block
Drag a Review Block onto the canvas, to the right of your Form Block. Click it and rename it to "Manager Review" in the General tab.
Assign a reviewer
In the Assignments tab, add the person who should review submissions. Pick a specific user, a team, or a role. The reviewer will see incoming requests in their task queue.
Add actions
Switch to the Actions tab and add two actions:
- An Approve action (type: approve), the button the reviewer clicks to approve
- A Reject action (type: reject), the button to reject the request
Step 4: Add Status Blocks
Click the Status Block in the library. A small menu appears with three presets: Approved, Rejected, and Default. Click Approved to place a green "Approved" status block, then click Status Block again and choose Rejected for a red one.
Status Blocks mark the end of a Flow path. They don't need any configuration. The presets handle the label and color for you.
Step 5: Connect the blocks
Now wire the blocks together:
- Hover over the Form Block to see the connection handle on its right side
- Drag from that handle to the Review Block to create a transition
- Drag from the Review Block to the Approved status block
- Drag another connection from the Review Block to the Rejected status block
Step 6: Publish and test
Click Publish in the toolbar. The system checks your flow for issues. If anything is missing (like an unconfigured assignment), you'll see a validation message. Fix any issues and publish again.
Once published, go back to your dashboard and click Start a Flow. Your new flow will appear in the list. Click it to submit a test request, then switch to your task queue to review and approve it.
